iGuzzini partners with the Mount Sinai Light and Health Research Center

The research center advances the well-being of people and the planet through light

The Light & Health Research Center (LHRC) - part of the Department of Population Health Science and Policy at the Icahn School of Medicine in the Mount Sinai Health System in New York - is led by Mariana Figueiro and brings together highly skilled researchers, educators, designers, sponsors and partners to identify strategies that can improve the lives of people and sustain a healthy planet through the science of light.

iGuzzini, which has always played a proactive role in developing Human-Centered solutions that increase people’s well-being, is currently working together with LHRC on the Light for Human Health programme that studies the effects of light on human circadian rhythms. In particular, the programme focuses on understanding and developing effective lighting applications (for example, in terms of quantity, spectrum, times, duration and distribution) that preserve correct circadian rhythms and therefore alleviate the symptoms of people living with Alzheimer’s disease, depression, jet lag or sleep disorders (this last issue is discussed in detail in our Lighthinking Magazine, in an interview with Mariana Figueiro).

As early as 1988, iGuzzini took part in its first experiments in the field of biodynamic light by working together with the Troy (New York) Lighting Research Center (LRC) headed by Mark Rea - now the Associate Director of LHRC -, to present, several years later, the first biodynamic luminaire called SIVRA (Automatically Adjusting Lighting System). Since then, it has continued to invest in the research and development of solutions in line with its vision of Social Innovation Through Lighting.
