About Project
The port of Helsinki is Finland’s main port, both for commercial and for foreign passenger traffic. Approximately 50% of Finland’s sea-transported foreign trade passes through Helsinki, while the passenger market share is 79%.
In recent years, the harbour area has been refurbished and extended, including the construction of the West Terminal 2 which received the 2017 Finnish Lighting Award for interior lighting in November 2017. The jury included representatives of various lighting organisations, including the SAFA (Finnish Association of Architects) and the SIO (Finnish Association of Interior Architects).
According to the jury, the ferry terminal is an excellent example of successful integration of architecture, functionality and lighting in accordance with a global design concept. Functional lighting solutions guide passengers throughout the terminal and the large windows allow optimal use of natural light. In the sizeable departure hall, which stands out through its spacious vault, IN30 High Contrast luminaires were successfully integrated into the wooden ceiling to create an atmosphere that is both calm and comfortable. The lower-ceiling areas were illuminated using IN30 Low Contrast luminaires. The significant extension of the terminal’s outdoor areas is highlighted by pole-mounted MaxiWoody projectors. These enhance the softness of the architecture and its subtle contours through comfortable, mellow lighting.
